Castle Waters is a luxuriously appointed and furnished Self Catering Mews House located in the private exclusive THE LAWN development, in the beautiful and ancient harbour village of Castletownshend on the West Cork Coastline midway between Glandore and Baltimore. The capital heritage town of Skibbereen is 12km away.
CASTLETOWNSHEND, the original seat of the Townshend family in Ireland, was anciently called in Gaelic Sleughleigh, which was built originally by and belonged to the Gaelic Clan MacCarthy’s. The old castle, the ruins of which can be observed within the demesne, was attacked and captured in 1690 by the Gaelic Clan O’Driscoll, subsequently attacked and taken by a Colonel Colliford. The village is a small but busy and lively fishing and seafront village developed around the Castle, which was constructed in the md 1600’s. The main street of the village, lined with large period houses from the 18th century, runs down a sharply sloped hill of about 25degrees leading to the Castle and the picturesque Harbour which the entrance is presided over by THE STAGS rocks that when viewed from the village upper harbour appear like phantom ships at sea.
St Barrahanes church overlooks the village. It is noted for its stained glass windows and many relics and memorials to the families of the village. The village is noted for the classical music festival that is held every summer in the church.
SOMERVILE AND ROSS THE SUTHORS OF THE IRISH RM AND THE REAL CHARLOTTE are buried here in the Chuch Yard.
The village has 3 traditional pubs, 2 restaurants, a shop and a post office.
Castle Waters self catering vacation holiday home is an ideal base in the village to enjoy the Castletownshend Regatta and various other festivals held in WEST CORK.
Take the coast road, drive to Lough Hyne Nature Reserve, then on to Baltimore, Schull and back by Skibbereen.
In the opposite direction take the winding road to Rinneen Wood and Estuary Walk, on to Union Hall, Glandore and Rosscarbery and back to Clonakilty.
A visit to the ancient perfect specimen of the stone fort or in Gaelic Cathair just above the village in high ground overlooking the Harbour is well worthy.
